Tucked away in the quieter stretch of West End is Duo Bar & Restaurant – the brain child of Tess Rigby, who dreamed of opening her own restaurant ever since she was a little girl! With over 15 years of experience in food and hospitality, Tess set her eyes on a quaint cafe space in Brisbane to call her own.
Teaming up with her sister, the name ‘Duo’ was a direct reference to their partnership as well as their vision for the the restaurant.
“It also comes from wanting to create a space that is a blend of opposite elements, country and city – a very relaxed setting within the hustle and bustle of the city. Rustic food with a modern twist and modern food with a rustic twist. Indoors meets outdoors.“
“We wanted the space to feel like you were visiting friends, family or neighbours and just enjoying good company with good food. Something that happens a lot when you live in a small town. We wanted to create a sense of community where our loyal regular customers are more than just customers, they become friends.“
Inheriting its black walls and timber claddings, Tess & her team sought to inject some personality into the interiors, adding hints of copper, greenery and hand-finished wooden table tops.
The space is intimate and moody, with exposed lightbulb pendants and a large mural of Brisbane’s iconic river views.
A beautifully crafted leather journal as a menu, the logo is debossed & gilded by Able Book Binding.
Featuring a scrumptious all-day breakfast menu, as well as lunch and tapas, the food at Duo is nothing short of amazing.
A feature wall of crates hand-assembled by Tess and her partner
With food and furniture design being two of Tess’ great passions, she is continually making small improvements to Duo – looking to add more plants that will thrive in the Brisbane climate, and completing the botanical ceiling that she’d put together with her dad. It is this passion that inspired our team to collaborate and provide seating solutions that can add a lightness to the ambience.

With years of experience in hospitality under his belt, Brodie Shaw and business partner Ben Evans embarked on an impressive journey to bring about Shawty’s Espresso – a hop, s(k)ip and a jump away from the Park Road train station in Woolloongabba.
Chancing upon a fixer-upper with great bones, the brave boys worked tirelessly to transform the space into a bright and inviting coffee haven. Partnering with local creatives, Shawty’s Espresso features a vibrant facade by graffiti legend Treazy, and a svelte fit-out designed by Carly Coghill of Design Tailor.
A contemporary, open-plan kitchen with subtle white pressed metal counter
Proudly brewing Coffee Supreme as their house staple, Shawty’s Espresso also carries various artisanal beans, allowing you to sample the the crèma de la crèma (pun intended) of coffees from the best roasters across Australia.
A mouth-watering line up of Normcore Coffee Roasters, Parallel Roasters, Square One Roasters, The Reformatory Caffeine Lab … just to name a few!
A little trade secret – Shawty’s Espresso uses a reverse osmosis filtration system, removing any debris, microbes, natural and synthetic toxins. Their water is then re-mineralised with beneficial minerals, producing the high-quality, delicious base for their teas and coffees!
Inspired by the clean lines and modern aesthetics of the cafe, our team provided elegant seating options without obstructing the flow of light to the layout, whilst complimenting the timber and metal finishings. See the range here!

I asked a regular visitor how they would describe Extraction Artisan Coffee. ‘It looks industrial but it feels homely,’ was the reply. After spending a morning at Extraction, there was no disputing that description. There is a definite sense of home … something that encourages you to spend time and enjoy your coffee and breakfast.
Co-owners, Heather and Alex, are long-time locals who wanted to create a space that afforded people in Logan a wonderful café experience instead of heading to Brisbane. Whatever your speed, you’ll find a space at Extraction that is perfect for your needs. Whether you like to sit at the brew bar and take in the art … or is that science … of the barista preparing your brew, find a comfy chair to read and chill or settle in at the tables for a team meeting or a catch up with friends. No matter your choice, you’ll never feel rushed or hurried.
8 Modern Melbourne Homes We Love
As a big fan of watching coffee preparation, I took the opportunity to watch Danny, an award-wining barista, meticulously prepare an El Salvador single origin as a pour over. What a delightful cup … fruity and juicy!
(Table in photo part is the Clarkson Dining Table.)
The 50-50 milk blend is a great café blend that is very easy drinking. I chatted with a visiting Brisbane coffee roaster who gave the blend a big thumbs-up. There are always single origins available, just ask the friendly staff for a recommendation.
(Chairs in photo are Evy Dining Arm Chairs – Pebble Grey and Cocoa Stain.)
Coffee beans selected by Extraction Artisan Coffee have cupping scores over 85 and are roasted in house on the shiny 10kg Proaster coffee roaster. If coffee is not your thing … hard to believe but I hear it’s true … then you can select from a range of teas from the West End Tea Company or go for a hot chocolate brewed using 50% Columbian cacao and 50% organic Colombian panela.
Classy and Classic Dining Room by Melissa from NSW
My friend arrived, so we moved to a table to taste the signature dish – Avocado on pumpkin bread … yummo! Heather described the Extraction menu as, ‘Café food with a fine dining edge.’ She was spot on, the quality and presentation of food was equal to any excellent Brisbane café you could mention.
The presentation had my eyes feasting well before my taste buds had a chance to savour. By the way, my taste buds weren’t disappointed … no wonder this dish has become a firm favourite.
If you haven’t had a delightful Logan City coffee experience, then get yourself to Extraction Artisan Coffee located at 7/3375 Pacific Highway. Gain access via the service road that runs next to the M1 at Slacks Creek. A good landmark is the blue sign of St Vinnies. Turn into the laneway and drive right to the end. Beware! The coffee, food and welcoming vibe make it hard to extract yourself … No wonder these guys won the Logan City 2016 Business Achievers Award for Hospitality and Tourism.
Scandinavian Pops of Color Nailed 5 Ways
You Vote We Listen
As voted by you and majority, we have dual winning design this week. Vitas and Meteo tables were a clear winner and curated into our store now.
Scandinavian-inspired and convertible, the Vitas Dining Table is perfect for dinner parties and celebrations. It has a leaf that folds inside the table when not in use. The other two pieces of the table slide together to shorten the furniture and save valuable space. The legs on this piece stand out because of their unusual shape. If you love entertaining, this is the table you can’t live without.
Feast joyfully at the Meteo Dining Table. Designed to accommodate a number of people at once, this piece of furniture is classic in appearance with its rounded corners and tall legs. Its wood finish complements any color of dining room making it a sound investment for you. You’ll admire its beauty throughout the years because of its structurally sound design and the quality materials that make it the incredible piece of furniture that it is. Best to style with the classic beautiful Jeniffer chairs.
Tucked away in the back streets of Albion is Craft Coffee, a creative hub of great nourishments and artisanal endeavours.
Craft Coffee was born out of the collaborative efforts between the Keller brothers, bridging their love of coffee, food and their family trade – shoemaking. The humble space is shared between the cafe and Brothers Footwear, their shoemaking and leatherworking atelier.
Craft Coffee launched last November purveying delicious Clean Skin brews to the local neighbourhood. Recently they acquired a pre-loved caravan, and hand-restored it into an outdoor kitchen.
The vibrant feature wall of botanic illustrations creates a bright and inviting interior, whilst complementing the warm hues of the woods. Exposed copper pipes and stylised draping lights add a touch of industrial chic.
Raw timber panels reinforce the rough-and-ready aesthetics of the atelier, producing a sense of cohesion throughout the space.
We instantly felt at ease amongst the friendly team; their dedication and passion is apparent and infectious!

The rich color of this wood is simply divine, adding a warmth and elegance to the home of customer Phil Camden. Long and dramatic, this dining table is the perfect centerpiece for his kitchen.
For those that love to host a large, welcoming table like this is ideal! The table is further enhanced by the modern chairs that surround it. We love how great Phil’s kitchen looks, and are so glad our furniture could help create this beautiful look.
